A Viking warlord whose nickname — "the Boneless" — has puzzled historians for over a millennium. He carved through England and Ireland in the 9th century, and the sagas can't agree whether the name refers to a crippling skeletal condition or simple impotence.
Ivar Ragnarsson was the son of the legendary Ragnar Loðbrok and Aslaug, though the historical link remains uncertain. He led Viking invasions deep into England and Ireland around 870, operating alongside brothers who included Björn Ironside and Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye. Some scholars identify him with Ímar, a Viking king who ruled Dublin between 870 and 873. He died around 873, leaving behind a reputation so vivid that the sagas couldn't settle on a single explanation for his name — one tradition insists he couldn't walk, another that the affliction was sexual.
