Born to aristocracy on Ithaca in 1871, Metaxas rose quickly through military ranks during the Greco-Turkish War and Balkan Wars, but his monarchist stance during the National Schism put him at odds with Venizelos - he led monarchist forces in the Noemvriana street battle and was exiled to Corsica in 1917. Returning to limited political success with his Freethinkers' Party, he was appointed prime minister in April 1936 after the monarchy's restoration, then launched a self-coup with King George II's backing to establish what he and some historians termed a totalitarian state - anti-communist, nationalist, authoritarian, debated ever since as fascist or something adjacent. On 28 October 1940 he rejected Italy's surrender demand, committing Greece to the Allies. He died three months later from a bloodstream infection, weeks before German tanks crossed the border.
