Born to aristocracy on Ithaca in 1871, Metaxas rose quickly through military ranks during the Greco-Turkish War and Balkan Wars, but his monarchist stance during the National Schism put him at odds with Venizelos—he led monarchist forces in the Noemvriana street battle and was exiled to Corsica in 1917.
