About
Born in Beirut's Shia suburbs in 1960, Nasrallah studied at seminaries in Tyre and Baalbek, briefly joined the Amal Movement, then helped found Hezbollah in 1982 as resistance to Israeli occupation. After religious studies in Iran, he returned to Lebanon and became secretary-general in 1992 when his predecessor was killed by Israeli strike. Under his command, Hezbollah acquired longer-range rockets and waged an 18-year campaign that ended with Israel's 2000 withdrawal from southern Lebanon—a date now a Lebanese public holiday.
