Born in 1916, Rudel flew 2,530 ground-attack missions on the Eastern Front, almost exclusively in the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka, destroying 519 tanks, a battleship, a cruiser, and claiming over 800 vehicles. He became the only recipient of the Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. After surrendering to US forces in 1945, he emigrated to Argentina as an unrepentant Nazi, helping fugitives escape to Latin America and the Middle East and sheltering Josef Mengele, the Auschwitz doctor.
