Hans-Ulrich Rudel

Born in 1916, Rudel flew 2,530 ground-attack missions on the Eastern Front, almost exclusively in the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka, destroying 519 tanks, a battleship, a cruiser, and claiming over 800 vehicles. He became the only recipient of the Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. After surrendering to US forces in 1945, he emigrated to Argentina as an unrepentant Nazi, helping fugitives escape to Latin America and the Middle East and sheltering Josef Mengele, the Auschwitz doctor. He worked as an arms dealer for right-wing South American regimes, drawing CIA surveillance, and ran as the top candidate for the far-right German Reich Party in West Germany's 1953 election without winning. Following the 1955 Argentinian coup that deposed Juan Perón, Rudel relocated to Paraguay, where he represented German companies until his death in 1982.
