Halford John Mackinder was born 15 February 1861 in Britain and built his early career in academia: first Principal of University Extension College, Reading, from 1892 to 1903, then Director of the London School of Economics from 1903 to 1908. He started as a liberal and free market advocate but shifted toward protectionism and conservatism from 1903 onward. He balanced scholarship with politics, serving as Conservative and Unionist MP for Glasgow Camlachie from 1910 to 1922 while continuing academic work part-time.
