Son of King Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden and Queen Frederica (1799–1877)
Born heir to the Swedish throne, he spent most of his life as a prince without a country after his father was deposed and the family exiled.
Gustav was born Crown Prince of Sweden on 9 November 1799, son of King Gustav IV Adolf and Queen Frederica. When his father was overthrown, the title that had been his from birth vanished. He lived the rest of his decades in exile, carrying an Austrian princely title — Wasa, spelled with one 's' — granted in 1829. He died in August 1877, seventy-seven years after entering the world as future king.
