About this person
Born in Nueva Vizcaya in 1786, he studied law at the College of San Ildefonso before joining José María Morelos in the independence war. He fought at Cuautla, took Oaxaca, and campaigned through Veracruz until his troops deserted him in 1817 and he went underground for four years. When the movement revived in 1821 under Guerrero and Iturbide, he emerged to help recapture Veracruz. After independence, he broke with Emperor Agustín de Iturbide over the suspension of congress, joined Santa Anna's revolt, and saw Iturbide exiled in 1823. Elected president in 1824, he opened relations with Britain, the U.S., Central America, and Gran Colombia, expelled remaining Spaniards, and took the last Spanish fort at San Juan de Ulúa. In 1829 he handed power to Guerrero without incident. He later served as senator, governor of Puebla, and helped end the Pastry War with France in 1838 before dying of epilepsy in 1843 at fifty-six.
