About

Goyaałé, "the one who yawns," was born into the Bedonkohe Apache in 1829 and spent nearly four decades raiding across Chihuahua, Sonora, New Mexico, and Arizona alongside fighters from three other Apache bands. The conflict intensified after 1848 when American expansion swallowed Apache land and forced reservation confinement on people used to moving freely. He led multiple breakouts starting in 1876, surrendered three times, and after an intense 1886 pursuit through northern Mexico finally gave himself up to Lt. Charles Bare Gatewood.
