English botanist and zoologist (1751–1813)
An English naturalist who spent decades cataloguing the natural world at a time when new specimens arrived faster than anyone could name them.
George Kearsley Shaw was born on 10 December 1751 in England. He worked as both a botanist and a zoologist, part of the generation tasked with imposing order on the flood of plants and animals pouring into Europe from expeditions across the globe. He died on 22 July 1813, leaving behind taxonomic work that formed part of the scaffolding others would build on.
