Born in 1580 to Spanish nobility, Francisco Gómez de Quevedo y Santibáñez Villegas became a Knight of the Order of Santiago and moved between politics and letters in the Baroque era. He wrote in conceptismo - a style that compressed thought into tight, loaded phrases - and spent his career in opposition to Luis de Góngora, whose culteranismo favored lush, elaborate language. The rivalry defined them both. Quevedo died on 8 September 1645, one of the most prominent poets Spain had produced.
