He led Hungary's eight-year rebellion against Habsburg rule in the early 1700s, refused the crown when parliament offered it, and chose exile over surrender when the war collapsed in 1711.
Born 27 March 1676 into Hungarian nobility, Rákóczi became prince of the Estates Confederated for Liberty of the Kingdom of Hungary when he launched the Rákóczi's War of Independence in 1703. The conflict ran until 1711, pitting his forces against the Habsburgs in a bid to break imperial control. When the Hungarian parliament offered him the royal crown, he refused it, taking instead the title "Ruling Prince of Hungary" — a deliberate choice meant to signal the war was about liberation, not personal ambition.
