France Prešeren was born 3 December 1800 and grew up in Carniola, gradually shifting from a regional identity to a broader Slovene one. He clashed with the civil and religious establishment and the provincial bourgeoisie of Ljubljana, writing lyric poetry in Slovene and German that braided unrequited love for his muse Julija Primic with love for a subjugated homeland and suffering humanity. He developed severe alcoholism, attempted suicide at least twice, and watched most of his closest friends die tragically.
