Queen consort of the Netherlands (r. 1879–1890)
She married a king forty-one years her senior, outlived him, and then ran the Netherlands for eight years as regent — holding power for a daughter too young to rule.
Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont became Queen of the Netherlands and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg when she married King-Grand Duke William III. When he died in 1890, their daughter Wilhelmina inherited the throne as a child, and Emma stepped into the role of regent. She governed the country from 1890 until 1898, when Wilhelmina came of age. Her popularity within the Dutch Royal Family endured long after she handed power back, and she lived until 1934.
