Biography

About

Lazar Markovich Lissitzky started illustrating Yiddish children's books to keep Jewish culture alive, teaching from age 15 onward. He studied under Kazimir Malevich and helped develop suprematism, then led the art group UNOVIS and spun off his own variant series, Proun. In 1921 he moved to the Weimar Republic, where he overhauled typography, photomontage, exhibition design, and book layout, winning international recognition. He kept teaching and innovating across schools and media for decades, exchanging ideas wherever he landed. In 1941, dying, he designed a propaganda poster urging more tank…
