French diplomat (1768-1835)
A marshal under Napoleon and later Prime Minister of France, he survived decades of war only to die in an assassin's bomb meant for someone else.
Édouard Adolphe Casimir Joseph Mortier was born 13 February 1768 and rose through the ranks during the French Revolutionary Wars, eventually becoming one of Napoleon's Marshals of the Empire. He commanded through the Napoleonic Wars and outlasted the collapse of the empire. By 1834 he had pivoted to politics, serving as Minister of War and then Prime Minister of France under King Louis Philippe I. On 28 July 1835, he was walking near the king when Giuseppe Marco Fieschi detonated a bomb aimed at the monarch. Mortier was one of eighteen killed in the blast.
