Den, also called Hor-Den or Udimu, ruled Egypt during the Early Dynastic Period and left more archaeological evidence than any other First Dynasty king. He held the title "King of Upper and Lower Egypt" and wore the double crown, red and white together. His tomb at Umm El Qa'ab near Abydos was built with a floor of red and black granite — the first time Egyptians used that hard stone for construction — and featured a flight of stairs leading down.
