South African Prime Minister (1874-1959)
He was prime minister when South Africa made apartheid law. The system that enforced racial segregation for nearly half a century began under his government.
Daniël François Malan was born on 22 May 1874. He became South Africa's fourth prime minister in 1948. During his tenure, which lasted until 1954, the National Party implemented apartheid — the system of racial segregation laws that would define the country for decades. He died on 7 February 1959.
