King of East Francia
The first non-Carolingian to wear the East Frankish crown, elected by dukes in 911 when the bloodline finally ran out. He was anointed where his predecessors had simply inherited.
Conrad was born around 881, ethnically Frankish, and by 906 had become Duke of Franconia. When the young Carolingian king Louis the Child died in 911, the stem duchy rulers broke with centuries of dynastic succession and elected Conrad instead — making him the first king chosen by the nobility rather than born to the throne, and the first to receive formal anointing. He ruled East Francia for seven years until his death on 23 December 918, closing a brief reign that had opened a new constitutional door.
