Christian Wolff

Born 24 January 1679, Wolff became the German Enlightenment's most systematic mind, the philosopher who stood between Leibniz and Kant and tried to organize all human knowledge by mathematical demonstration. He wrote his scholarship in German, breaking with Latin convention, then translated it back for Europe's learned class. He didn't just theorize: he founded economics and public administration as university subjects, advised government officials on practical policy, and insisted that higher education train professionals, not just gentlemen. Ennobled as Christian von Wolff in 1745, he kept building his vast rational architecture until his death on 9 April 1754, leaving behind a model of Enlightenment reasoning that some считали the epoch's high-water mark in Germany.
