Chiune Sugihara served as vice-consul for the Japanese Empire in Kaunas, Lithuania, during the Second World War. Refugees from German-occupied Western Poland, Soviet-occupied Eastern Poland, and Lithuania itself arrived desperate for escape routes. Sugihara issued transit visas allowing thousands of Jews to travel through Japanese territory, knowing the decision risked his career and his family's safety. Lithuania declared 2020 "The Year of Chiune Sugihara." Today, descendants of those who received his visas number between 40,000 and 100,000. Streets in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv-Jaffa bear his name.
