Berenice II of Egypt

Berenice inherited Cyrenaica in 250 or 249 BCE and briefly married Demetrius the Fair to secure his rule, but a power struggle with her mother followed. She then married her half-cousin Ptolemy III, folding Cyrenaica back into Ptolemaic Egypt in 246 BCE. As queen she governed actively, entered the state cult, and was worshipped as a deity in her own right. Her hair sacrifice became the stuff of legend, pinned to the night sky in the constellation that still bears her name. In 221 BCE, shortly after her son Ptolemy IV took the throne, the regent Sosibius had her murdered.
