Vangeliya Pandeva Gushterova was born on 3 October 1911 in Bulgaria and lost her sight in her teens. She later claimed the ability to see what was coming, and as Baba Vanga she built a following as a mystic and healer, spending most of her life in the Rupite area of the Belasica mountains. During the Cold War her reputation for clairvoyance and precognition spread across parts of Eastern Europe. She died on 11 August 1996, but the fall of communism and the rise of the internet kept her persona alive — her alleged predictions still make the rounds, parsed and argued over by people who never met…
