First Abbasid
The first caliph of the Abbasid Caliphate called himself "the Blood-Shedder" during his inaugural address and made the name stick through massacre.
Abu al-ʿAbbās ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-ʿAbbās was born in 721 or 722. He became the first caliph of the Abbasid Caliphate, which would become one of the longest and most important caliphates in Islamic history. In the Great Mosque of Kufa, during his inaugural homage as Caliph, he gave himself the laqab "al-Saffāḥ" — "the Blood-Shedder." The name may have been tactical intimidation or a plain description of his methods. It adhered through his systematic massacre of the Umayyads. He died 8 June 754.
