Archduchess of Austria (1883-1963)
The only child of Austria's doomed Crown Prince Rudolf, she later earned the nickname "The Red Archduchess" by joining the Social Democratic Party — a Habsburg who became a socialist.
Born 2 September 1883 to Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria and heir to Emperor Franz Joseph I, and Princess Stéphanie of Belgium, Elisabeth Marie occupied the innermost circle of European royalty. Her family called her "Erzsi," the Hungarian diminutive. After her father's death, she grew into a political life her lineage never anticipated. She joined the Austrian Social Democratic Party, a turn so unexpected it gave her a second name: The Red Archduchess. She died 16 March 1963, having outlived the empire entirely.
