French Queen, middle daughter of Yaroslav the Wise, Grand Prince of Kyiv and Novgorod
A princess from Kievan Rus who married into the French throne, then scandalized the realm by remarrying a count while serving as regent for her own son.
Anne Yaroslavna was born around 1030 in Kievan Rus. In 1051 she married King Henry I of France and became Queen. When Henry died in 1060, she took the reins as regent for their young son Philip I. Her regency ended abruptly with a marriage that raised eyebrows across the kingdom: she wed Count Ralph IV of Valois while still holding power. Before the controversy, she had founded the Abbey of St. Vincent at Senlis. She died in 1075.
