Born Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro on 30 August 1821 in Brazil, she met Giuseppe Garibaldi during his exile in South America and became both his wife and his comrade-in-arms in the republican uprisings that convulsed the continent. She fought alongside him through years of guerrilla warfare, proving as committed to revolutionary liberalism as any soldier in his ranks. Their partnership carried them back across the Atlantic to Italy, where the cause continued and the risks multiplied. She died on 4 August 1849, not yet 28, while they fled Austrian troops - the embodiment of the Age of Romanticism's most dangerous ideal: that love and revolution could be the same fire.
