Alfred Ernst Rosenberg was a Baltic German who entered Hitler's orbit through Dietrich Eckart and became the party's chief ideologue. His 1930 book The Myth of the Twentieth Century laid out core Nazi doctrine: racial hierarchy, hatred of Jews, the demand for Lebensraum, rejection of Versailles, and contempt for "degenerate" art and traditional Christianity. He edited the party newspaper Völkischer Beobachter, led the NSDAP Office of Foreign Affairs from 1933 to 1945, and ran Amt Rosenberg, the regime's cultural surveillance apparatus.
