Alexander Mikhailovich Prokhorov

Born in Australia in 1916, Prokhorov grew up to become a Soviet physicist working at the frontier of quantum electronics. His research into optics and electromagnetic phenomena laid groundwork for technologies that didn't yet exist. In 1964 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Charles Hard Townes and Nikolay Basov for fundamental contributions to maser and laser development - devices that would reshape surgery, manufacturing, telecommunications, and measurement itself. He continued his research career until his death in 2002, having spent decades watching the practical world catch up to the quantum principles he'd helped prove.
