Born around 870, Abu Nasr Muhammad al-Farabi worked across logic, metaphysics, political philosophy, ethics, and music theory, weaving them into a framework that went beyond his Greco-Roman and Syriac predecessors. He presented philosophy as a unified discipline to the Islamic world and created a system distinctly his own, one that later thinkers would mine for centuries. His influence ran through Avicenna, Averroes, Maimonides, and reached as far as Albertus Magnus in the Latin West. He died in December 950 or January 951, leaving a structure of thought that made every philosopher after him reckon with what he'd laid down.
