Born in November 1931, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel trained as an architect and worked as a painter and sculptor before turning his attention to community organizing and activism. When Argentina's civil-military dictatorship seized power in 1976, he became a vocal opponent of the regime. The authorities detained him, held him without trial for 14 months, and tortured him. In 1980, while the dictatorship still held the country, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for that opposition. The regime would not fall until 1983. He also received the Pacem in Terris Award, among other distinctions.
