## Bio

Born in Jerusalem in 1922 to Eastern European immigrants, Rabin joined the Palmach as a teenager and rose through military ranks over a 27-year career, becoming chief of the general staff in 1964 and overseeing Israel's victory in the 1967 Six-Day War. He served as ambassador to the United States from 1968 to 1973, then became prime minister in 1974 after Golda Meir's resignation, signing the Sinai Interim Agreement and ordering the Entebbe raid before resigning in 1977 amid a financial scandal. After years as defense minister during the First Intifada, he was re-elected prime minister in 1992 on a peace platform and signed the Oslo Accords with Palestinian leadership, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 alongside Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat. He also signed a peace treaty with Jordan that same year. On 4 November 1995, Yigal Amir, an extremist opposed to the Oslo process, assassinated him — making Rabin the first native-born Israeli prime minister, the only one murdered, and a lasting symbol of the peace effort he died pursuing.
