## Bio

Born into Chu nobility around 232 BC, Xiang Yu joined his uncle Xiang Liang's rebellion against the Qin dynasty and earned the title Duke of Lu from the restored Chu king in 208 BC. The next year he commanded an outnumbered force to a crushing victory at Julu against Qin armies under Zhang Han. When Qin collapsed, he divided China into a federation of Eighteen Kingdoms, declared himself Hegemon-King of Western Chu, and ruled a sprawling territory from his capital at Pengcheng. A gifted tactician on the field, he proved disastrous at statecraft — especially after dismissing his adviser Fan Zeng — and his rival Liu Bang steadily outmaneuvered him in the civil war that followed. Xiang Yu made his last stand at Gaixia around January 202 BC and killed himself in defeat, clearing the way for Liu Bang to found the Han dynasty.
