# Winston Churchill

> He held the line when Britain stood alone against Nazi Germany, turned speeches into weapons, and made stubbornness a national strategy. Churchill's wartime prime ministership - the cigar, the growl, the refusal to yield - became the template for what resolute leadership looks like under existential threat.

## Bio

Born into aristocratic wealth in Oxfordshire in 1874, Churchill joined the British Army at twenty-one, saw combat in India and the Boer War, and wrote his way into public notice as a war correspondent. Elected a Conservative MP in 1900, he switched to the Liberals in 1904, rose through Asquith's cabinet as Home Secretary and First Lord of the Admiralty, then fell hard after the Dardanelles disaster sent him briefly to the trenches in 1915. He spent the 1920s as Chancellor under Baldwin, the 1930s out of power warning about Nazi rearmament while others looked away, and May 1940 back at the top when Chamberlain's government collapsed. His five wartime years steered Britain through alliance, bombardment, and finally victory, but voters turned him out in 1945. He coined "iron curtain" in opposition, won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his war histories, returned as Prime Minister from 1951 to 1955 overseeing housebuilding and imperial retreat, and died in January 1965 with a state funeral that stopped the nation.
