## Bio

Wilhelm Wundt was a German physiologist and philosopher who saw that the mind could be studied with the rigor of a laboratory experiment. In 1879, at the University of Leipzig, he opened the first formal psychological research lab, marking the field's independence from philosophy and biology. He followed with the first academic journal dedicated to the new science, Philosophische Studien, in 1883, later replaced by Psychologische Studien in 1905. A 1991 survey of American historians of psychology ranked him first in all-time eminence — ahead of William James and Sigmund Freud by a wide margin. He died in 1920, having built the scaffolding on which a century of research would stand.
