# Walter Gropius

> He founded the Bauhaus and spent the rest of his career living in its shadow - or its light, depending on how you see it. The school lasted fourteen years; the aesthetic it codified has outlasted nearly everything else built in the twentieth century.

## Bio

Born in Berlin in 1883, Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar after the First World War and taught there for years, becoming the face of the International Style - steel, glass, flat roofs, no ornament. When Germany turned, he left: England in 1934, then the United States in 1937. He landed at Harvard's Graduate School of Design and stayed, shaping a generation of architects while working on projects with Marcel Breuer and co-founding The Architects Collaborative. In 1959 he won the AIA Gold Medal. He died in 1969, by which point modernism had become the default and the Bauhaus a chapter in every textbook.
