Born in 1978 in Kryvyi Rih to a Russian-speaking Jewish family, Zelenskyy earned a law degree but chose comedy instead, co-creating the production company Kvartal 95. His TV series Servant of the People, where he played a president, aired from 2015 to 2019 and became immensely popular; a party with the same name formed in March 2018. Running as anti-establishment and anti-corruption, he won the 2019 election in the biggest landslide in Ukrainian presidential history. Early on, he pushed e-government and tried to end the Donbas war through dialogue with Putin, but a Russian military buildup in 2021 sparked crisis. On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded; Zelenskyy declared martial law, stayed in the capital as it came under attack, and has since visited frontlines and met world leaders to secure military aid and support. Named Time Person of the Year for 2022, he remains in office under martial law, now the second-longest serving Ukrainian president.
