Vincent Kennedy McMahon graduated from East Carolina University in 1968 and started as a WWE commentator through the 1970s before buying the company from his father in 1982. He consolidated what had been separate regional promotions into a near-monopoly, launching WrestleMania and later absorbing rivals World Championship Wrestling in 2001 and Extreme Championship Wrestling's assets in 2003. In 1997 he began performing as "Mr. McMahon," an on-screen villain who barked "you're fired!" and competed in matches, winning championships and headlining pay-per-views. Hush-money allegations over affairs with former employees forced him to step down as chairman and CEO in June 2022, replaced by his daughter Stephanie, and he announced retirement the following month. He returned as executive chairman in January 2023 and oversaw WWE's merger with UFC into TKO Group Holdings that April, but resigned from TKO in January 2024 after sex trafficking and sexual assault allegations surfaced. He settled Securities and Exchange Commission charges for over $1.7 million in January 2025 for undisclosed payments, without admitting or denying the findings.
