## Bio

Born 31 May 1963, Orbán was elected to parliament in 1990 and became prime minister in 1998, leading a conservative coalition that brought Hungary into NATO and reduced inflation. After losing in 2002, he spent eight years in opposition before returning in 2010 with a supermajority he would win again in three consecutive elections. His second stretch in power brought sweeping changes: constitutional amendments in 2013, judiciary reforms, new media regulators, and measures restricting LGBTQ rights and opposing EU migration policy. Fidesz was suspended from the European People's Party in 2019, then quit in 2021 over rule-of-law disputes; corruption allegations shadowed public contracts and EU funds, and Freedom House flagged democratic backsliding. In 2026, record turnout handed him a landslide loss to Péter Magyar's Tisza Party. Orbán refused his parliamentary seat but kept his party post.
