# Vicente Guerrero

> Vicente Guerrero refused to stop. When Mexico's independence war collapsed in 1815, he kept fighting alone in the mountains for six years - long enough that the empire finally had to negotiate. The man who wouldn't surrender became the president who abolished slavery, then died in front of a firing squad.

## Bio

Born in Tixtla in 1782 to modest means, Guerrero worked as a muleteer before joining José María Morelos's insurgent army in late 1810, recruiting in Spanish and Indigenous languages across the southern campaign. After Morelos's execution in December 1815, Guerrero became the last major commander still in the field, waging guerrilla war in the Tierra Caliente from 1816 to 1821 and turning down viceregal pardons. In early 1821 royalist officer Agustín de Iturbide opened talks; Guerrero's terms were total independence and citizenship without caste distinction, issued as the Plan of Iguala on 24 February 1821, and their combined army entered Mexico City that September. He backed Iturbide's short-lived empire, then joined the republican rising that toppled it. After a contested 1828 election and revolts in his favor, Congress named him president in April 1829. Facing a Spanish invasion, he abolished slavery on 15 September 1829, but his vice president Anastasio Bustamante turned on him that December.
