Vallabhbhai Patel was born in Nadiad, Gujarat, on 31 October 1875, trained as a lawyer, and became one of Gandhi's earliest political lieutenants, organising peasants in Kheda, Borsad, and Bardoli in non-violent resistance against the British Raj. From 1934 he ran the Congress party's machinery from Bombay — fundraising, candidate selection, election strategy — and on 7 August 1942 delivered a speech to over 100,000 at Gowalia Tank that historians credit with igniting the Quit India rebellion nationwide. When independence came in 1947, Patel became Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, organising refugee relief during Partition's chaos and managing the Indo-Pakistani War. His defining achievement: persuading, alongside Nehru and Mountbatten, nearly every one of the 565 princely states released from British rule to join India rather than fracture into sovereign splinters. He died on 15 December 1950, remembered as the Iron Man who forged a country from hundreds of pieces.
