## Bio

Born in 371 to emperor Valentinian I and empress Justina, he was elevated to the purple at age four in 375 by military commanders upon his father's death — the youngest emperor the Western Roman Empire would see. Until 383 he remained junior partner to his older half-brother Gratian, while their uncle Valens and later Theodosius I governed the East. When the usurper Magnus Maximus killed Gratian in 383, Valentinian II's court in Milan became a battleground between Nicene and Arian Christians. Maximus invaded Italy in 387, forcing Valentinian II and his family to flee to Thessalonica and plead for Theodosius's intervention. Theodosius crushed Maximus and restored him in 388, but Valentinian II ruled from Gaul largely as a figurehead under the control of Arbogast, a powerful general and regent. On 15 May 392, he was found dead in his palace — some contemporaries called it suicide, others murder by the very general he'd tried to dismiss.
