## Bio

Urho Kaleva Kekkonen entered Parliament in 1936, served twice as prime minister in the early 1950s, and narrowly won the presidency in 1956. He built his power by positioning himself as the sole figure who could manage Soviet relations, winning reelection in 1962 after the Note Crisis drove his main opponent from the race. Through the 1960s and 70s he appointed centrist-left coalitions favored by Moscow while freezing out the right, and in 1973 Parliament extended his term by emergency law with 170 votes in favor. The apex came in 1975 when he hosted the Helsinki security conference and forced party leaders into a new cabinet on live television. Elected again in 1978, his health collapsed within years; he resigned in late 1981, his three-decade dominance ending in visible decline. His successors rewrote the constitution to prevent another presidency like his.
