# Tughril

## Bio

After the deaths of earlier Seljuk leaders, Tughril united the Turkoman tribes and was declared sultan in 1037. Three years later, his forces crushed the Ghaznavids at the Battle of Dandanqan in 1040, ending their control of Khorasan and opening Persia. He took Nishapur, then Ray, then Isfahan — each in turn made capital as the empire pushed west. In 1055, answering an invitation from Caliph al-Qa'im, Tughril entered Baghdad, expelled the Buyids, and formalized a new order: the caliph kept spiritual authority, Tughril took everything else. He suppressed his brother Ibrahim Inal's revolt and executed him, defeated a Fatimid-backed rival, and forced the caliph's daughter into marriage over the caliph's objections. He died in 1063 without an heir, leaving behind a model of absolute sultanate rule that fused Turkic power, Persian administration, and Abbasid legitimacy — a template that would shape the region for generations.
