Timothy James Walz was born April 6, 1964, in West Point, Nebraska, graduated from Butte High School in 1982, joined the Army National Guard, worked in a factory, then earned a degree from Chadron State College before moving to Minnesota in 1996 to teach social studies and coach football. In 2006 he defeated six-term Republican incumbent Gil Gutknecht to win Minnesota's 1st congressional district, served six terms in the House — rising to ranking member of Veterans Affairs — then won the governor's mansion in 2018. His first term was defined by managing the George Floyd protests and COVID-19; his second by a two-year Democratic trifecta that passed felony voting rights restoration, cannabis legalization, trans refuge protections, universal gun background checks, abortion codification, and free college tuition for low-income families. Vice President Kamala Harris picked him as her running mate on August 6, 2024; they lost to Donald Trump and JD Vance.
