Thomas was one of the Twelve Apostles, his name meaning "the Twin" in both Aramaic and Greek. When told of the resurrection, he doubted until Jesus appeared and showed him the marks of crucifixion; Thomas then declared "My Lord and my God." Early Christian tradition holds that he traveled east in the mid-to-late 30s, establishing the Church of the East across Upper Mesopotamia before heading further into Asia around the late 40s. He's believed to have arrived at Muziris and is credited with founding the first Christian communities in India, where Saint Thomas Christians still revere him as patron saint. His influence reached across southern Asia and the Middle East, and in 1258 some of his relics were moved to Ortona, Italy, where they remain in the Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle.
