## Bio

Thomas More was born 7 February 1478 in England and rose through law to become Lord Chancellor under Henry VIII in October 1529. He published Utopia in 1516, imagining an island republic that became a lasting thought experiment. A committed Catholic humanist, he directed polemics against Luther, Zwingli, and Tyndale during the Reformation's early battles. When Henry VIII split from Rome and demanded an oath recognizing him as supreme head of the Church of England, More refused — he would not accept the annulment of Catherine of Aragon or the break itself. Convicted of treason on what he called false evidence, he was executed 6 July 1535, reportedly saying at the scaffold: "I die the King's good servant, and God's first." The Catholic Church canonized him in 1935; in 2000 he was named patron saint of statesmen and politicians.
