## Bio

Born 15 October 1265, Temür was the third son of Crown Prince Zhenjin and grew up in the shadow of Kublai Khan's conquests. When his grandfather died in 1294, Temür took the throne as the second emperor of the Yuan dynasty and sixth Great Khan of a Mongol Empire that existed more on paper than in practice. He called off the grinding campaigns against Burma, Đại Việt, and Japan — wars that had consumed men and silver for years — and turned instead to Confucian ceremony and the architecture of governance. He achieved nominal suzerainty over the scattered Mongol khanates, a diplomatic feat that papered over fracture. But his reign, from May 1294 to his death on 10 February 1307, set patterns that would define the Yuan for decades: able enough to hold the center, but already hollowed by graft and administrative failure.
