Stephan Brandner was born 29 May 1966 in Herten and rose through the Alternative for Germany, the far-right party that cracked the postwar consensus. He led the AfD's 2017 campaign in Thuringia and won a Bundestag seat that year. By January 2018 he held the Legal Affairs Committee gavel, a position no AfD member had taken before. The other parties stripped it from him in November 2019, a move almost unheard of in German parliamentary practice. He landed as one of three deputy chairmen of the AfD itself, a post he's held since.
