Born Sofia Scicolone in 1934, she entered a beauty pageant as a teenager and was steered toward acting lessons. Bit parts at 16 gave way to a five-picture Paramount contract in 1956 that made her an international fixture and one of the defining sex symbols of the 1950s. Then came Two Women in 1960, directed by Vittorio De Sica: her turn as Cesira earned the first-ever Academy Award for a non-English-language performance. Seven David di Donatello Awards followed, along with a second Oscar nomination for Marriage Italian Style, special Golden Globes, and honors at Venice and Cannes. By the 1980s she stepped back, appearing less frequently—Prêt-à-porter, Nine, The Life Ahead at 86. France made her a Knight of the Legion of Honour; Italy gave her its highest civilian decoration. She outlasted the Golden Age itself.
