# Sissel Kyrkjebø

> She sang the Olympic Hymn to open and close the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games, lent her voice to the Titanic soundtrack, and has moved 10 million solo albums in a country of 5 million people. Norway's crossover soprano made a mononym out of her first name for everywhere else.

## Bio

Sissel Kyrkjebø was born 24 June 1969 and rose in Norway in the late 1980s and early 1990s, her cover of Ole Paus' "Innerst i sjelen" spreading wide in the '90s. The 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer put her voice on a global stage, followed by duets at Christmas in Vienna that year with Plácido Domingo and Charles Aznavour, then Carreras, Bocelli, Groban, and a lengthening list across pop, classical, and folk. Her 2006 concert with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir earned two US Grammy nominations in December 2007. She and Odd Nordstoga share the rare distinction of an 11-times-platinum Norwegian album for Strålande Jul, and though she sings mainly in English and Norwegian, she has worked in at least 17 languages. Abroad she dropped the surname - Kyrkjebø means "church farm" - and answers to Sissel.
